Font fun ~ printing white text.

Ever wonder how to print white text on a dark background when your printer doesn’t have white ink? Like I did on this layout that I just dropped off at the store.

It’s easy! I’ll give you a brief step by step using Microsoft Word. If you have a different word processor program on your computer it should still be fairly easy to figure out how to do the same thing.

First open a new word document and select “Insert” on the menu bar. Scroll down and click on “Text Box” from the dropdown menu. You can resize the text box to fit your planned journaling spot on the layout simply by clicking inside the box and then dragging the sides outward with your mouse.

Next select the font and font size you want to use from the Formatting toolbar. Click inside the text box, and type your journaling.

Now for the magic. Click on the text box. If the text box isn’t highlighted the drop down list will show different options and “Text Box” won’t be one of them. Select “Format” on the menu bar. Scroll down to the bottom and click “Text Box” from the dropdown menu.

In the Format text box select the “Colors and Lines” tab if it’s not already selected. In the “fill” option, select black. Click OK. The text box should now be black, possibly hiding any typing. Now drag your mouse over your text highlighting it and select white on the Formatting toolbar; that’s the A at the top of your screen.

Now print your journaling on white cardstock and Presto Chango, you have white text on a black background. Cut around the black rectangle and adhere to your layout.

What you’re really doing is making your journaling transparent so no ink is being spit on the page where your text is. Instead we just coloured the background around the text. Can you see the possibilities?
Try different coloured backgrounds instead of black. Something to coordinate with your patterned papers.
Or instead of printing on white cardstock, print your journaling on a patterned background so it shows through in your text. This would be really effective if you used a big blocky text like this one at www.getfreefonts.com.

Lots of options for creative journaling. We'd love to see how you use this technique.
